[USS Charon] SD 240911.06 || Joint Duty Backlog || Cmdr. Calhoun, CEO & Ens. Dicari, COP

Cyrin headed down to Main Engineering, he hadn’t had a chance to speak to Commander Calhoun in quite some time.  He had been avoiding the Commander, especially since he blew up the Commanding Officer’s Ready room, the one time he had contact with the Commander was when he was on Llyria, but even then the Commander hadn’t responded.  Cyrin walked into Main Engineering and was greeted by a sea of gold uniforms, spotting Lieutenant Junior Grade Darc he let a smile slip on his face, even though her back was turned to him.

“Excuse me, where is Commander Calhoun he asked one of the engineering officers?”

“I don’t rightly know sir.  Sorry.”  Came the reply.  Cyrin shrugged and continued to look for the Chief Engineer in the chaos called Main Engineering.

Quentin stepped out of his office and noticed the Chief Operations officer floundering around near the ‘pool table’. He had heard the stories about his attempted assassination and couldn’t help but be somewhat concerned about his motive, and more importantly why he was now in engineering unannounced. “Can I help you?” he said moving up behind the man and knocking back some painkillers as he did so.

Turning around abruptly, Cyrin looked at the Chief Engineer.  “Sir,” Cyrin responded, “yes, you might be able to.  As you may be aware I have my department doing a full maintenance on this vessel.  The only department that I am not doing maintenance on is yours obviously,” Cyrin added with a smile.  “However, I wanted to know if perhaps there was a chance we could run maintenance diagnostics on the impulse drive to perhaps increase its optimal operating efficiency.”  Cyrin suggested; it would be something to get him away from his department for a bit.  He had also wanted to apologize to the Commander about the destruction he had caused, but would rather do it in private without all his engineers around.

Quentin raised an eyebrow at the young ensign’s comments. He was skeptical as to his motives but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. “Please, come through to my office and we can discuss your ideas” he said motioning to the open glass door. As the two entered he pressed a button in the glass and the door slid shut. “Take a seat” he said motioning to a chair as he sat behind the desk and clasped his hands together. “So, what makes you feel the need to run impulse diagnostics – surely there is something far more important you could be doing?” he asked.

Cyrin followed the Commander into his office and sat down when it was offered to him, “Thank you sir.  First before we begin, I wanted to apologize for the…umm…incident with the Captains Ready Room.  As for the impulse drive, consider it a penance to you, and a favor to someone else.” He offered shifting slightly in his chair to get a bit more comfortable.  “As for anything else, of course there is always something to do.  However, I believe my department has it covered.  For all intents and purposes Commander, I am currently off duty.  Therefore I offer my services and ideas.”  He offered, waiting to hear the Commander comment before elaborating on his idea.

Quentin nodded to the ensign. "No real harm done" he stated simply. "What did you have in mind?" he asked.

“Well, I couldn’t help but notice that the impulse drive isn’t running at peak performance.  I figured we could bring it up to peak performance and maybe manipulate a few things and bring it roughly zero point three four percent above optimal performance level.  I have run a few tests and show that the engines as well as the hull could handle it without any significant damage.”  He added.

"Sounds good" Quentin said getting up and ushering the Ensign out of his office and back into the busy hive that was main engineering. "Let's get to work implementing your idea" he said with a grin heading over to the 'pool table' to bring up the impulse manifold control display. "Where do you want to start with this?" he said wanting to see just how well thought out and tested this idea was.

“Well we would defiantly want to start with a diagnostics.  This way we can locate the problem of the decrease in performance.  Afterwards, obviously we would fix those problematic areas, which may mean some rerouting of power, which would require some stabilization.  That can easily be done on my end.  Of course we would want to increase the intake slightly to increase the performance.  However, that would be the tricky part.  One wrong input could be catastrophic.  I believe we could calibrate the impulse engines properly to where we won’t have that issue.  We would need to equalize the intake increase by distributing the additional power.  That part is the only area that I am having some difficulty figuring out.  My tests even displayed that if the power wasn’t distributed in an even manner, that we would have a problem.”  Cyrin said with confidence, “Yet, you are the Chief Engineer, so any additional input or changes would be most appreciated.”

"Distribution of power can be done by re-routing the input along a hard-line node connecting the buffers with the manifolds - that way we won’t blow them out the first time we switch it on. Our buffers however aren't designed for anymore output so we would need to strengthen them with some ingenuity. As for where we take the power from, I would suggest non-essential systems would be the best option. Currently for example the empty cargo bays that aren't in use are still hooked up to the life support and air purification network - we may as well borrow from there by reducing the atmosphere by 18.7%" he suggested. "Overall though it is a good grasp of what needs doing" he added nodding to the Ensign in approval as he was redeeming himself in Quentin's eyes. "I'll bring up the impulse engine scan systems display and initiate, look for any spikes in the signal" he instructed as he tapped away at the main console.

Cyrin nodded, though he wasn’t fully familiar with engineering.  He understood the theories and some of the concepts.  “Power spikes, correct?”  Cyrin asked wanting to be fully aware of what he was looking for seeing as there were several types of spikes possible.  “As for power I agree with re-routing from non-essential areas.  The buffers could be increased to handle the output.  That Commander is the easy part,” Cyrin said with a slight chuckle sensing the Commanders approval.
