[USS Charon] SD 241001.02 II Back Duty Log - Observations of The Yy’a Nebula - Ensign Thomas Clipper

[USS Charon – Deck 3, Science Labs]

Thomas took a long drink from his coffee before he realized how terribly cold it had become. He had been looking over the sensor logs for hours.  Even though their entire foray within the nebula had been one of survival there was plenty of data to be analyzed.

"Computer Begin voice Log." He spoke as he got out of his chair and made his way towards the replicator. "Black Coffee, Hot." he requested but quickly sighed. "Computer delete last sentence from the log." Taking the coffee he took a sip before he continued. "Duty log notes for Ensign Thomas Clipper."

"For classification purposes the Yy'a nebula is a Mutara class with many additional phenomena located within its bounds creating an extremely hazardous environment." He paused to take another sip of his now refreshingly hot drink before continuing the caffeine giving him a much wanted second wind.

"Due to the effects of the nebula, sensor information was severely compromised as well as shield efficiency and stability. Unlike most nebula of this classification the radiation and static discharge levels observed were insufficient to entirely compromise all shield systems. Nor was gigantic hole in engineering." Thomas chuckled to himself as he remembered what one of the engineers had told him about their expierances as he idly sifted through the information. He continued to do so as he added.

"Computer delete last sentence and attach compiled sensor data logs showing the monitored Static discharge levels within the nebula against levels found in open space as well as those recorded within other Murata Classes."

"No astrogeologic features were found from the recorded sensor data however over 72% of the Nebula was not subjected to scans which would have be able to determine if such features are present within the nebula's bounds." While he had continued dictation he was now specifically looking over initial information that was taken while en route to the nebula "Computer, make a reference note to the preliminary scan results taken on approach to the nebula."

He continued "Of note large quantities of Thoron Particles are present within the nebula's bounds. Sensor logs have registered the Thoron Radiation contributed significantly toward the sensor disruptions while within the nebula." He quipped "Computer also add the logs regarding Thoron density within the Nebula. "

Conscious not to let this cup go cold he took another drink of his beverage before continuing "A large quantity of plasma eddies are located within Yy'a. The combination of the natural effects of the nebula including poor sensor and shield performance makes navigation of the nebula extremely hazardous. Ionized mass within the nebula is attracted to the eddies their flow has the potential to create currents and while not capable of exceeding the output of functional impulse engines, has the capacity to move disabled or distressed ships."

"A debris field was observed next the one of the eddies. Analysis of the available sensor data presents the probable conclusion the eddy combined with the shield and sensor interrupting effects of the nebula were strong enough to overcome the systems of and destroy a D'Deriex class Romulan warbird."

He said the words before going quiet for a minute. It was foreign to him to not dwell on such a loss of life. How should he feel that hundreds had likely perished? Especially considering that if they hadn't he would have likely been the deceased statistic. Granted his death would have come from a disruptor rifle rather than a natural occurrence. What those people had done on that planet had been for no one's eyes but theirs. Their conviction in pursuit was a testament to that. Thomas simply couldn't comprehend those emotions. For now he chose not too and continued.

"In conclusion while the survey of the nebula was not completed and compiled data was not thoroughly cross referenced due to critical damage and causalities by an attack from a hostile force it is suitable to advise that extreme care should be taken when entering the nebula, also that further analysis would be beneficial to accurately catalog this stellar body as well as further investigate if the Plasma Eddies and other phenomena present in this stationary nebula have any other associations with Neutronic storms." Standing and grabbing a PADD as he finished the last sentence he finalized.

"Computer end log. Title as 'Observations of The Yy'a Nebula' affix Timestamp and my Signature, save a copy to the database and move a copy to the PADD I'm holding."

Noticing the time as he read the dictated notes back to himself he realized his scheduled punishment shift on deck 12 was almost due to begin. Draining the last of his cup he went back over to the replicator. This time dialing up substantially more the precious black liquid to be delivered in an insulated flask. He took it as went first to deliver the report. Before becoming further acquainted with the Deuterium tanks and antimatter storages on deck 12 for another 8 hours.
