[USS Charon] SD 240908.28 | Joint Back Log IV | Lt Cmdr Akasy, COP's Zetari & Ens Dicari, COP's Charon

"Life In The Academy: Part IV"

Leaning against one of the trees he looked at her, "Yes it is a strategic game, however… even the needs of the one can outweigh the needs of the few.  For example, the Federation President… he doesn't need all the security personnel around him at all times.  But he does; and why, because his needs outweigh the many.  It is the same in chess.  The needs of the king outweigh the needs of the many."

He watched as some type of bird flew across the sky.  "Even a Vulcan's logic is not so logical."
"Well," her whiskers twitched a little as she answered, "I would say that, mew, on the contrary, this is a perfect example of that Vulcan logic. In chess, to win, you must protect your king. If the king is taken, you have lost. So, in this case, the needs of the many, your 'team', which is the survival of the king, outweighs the need of the one, the pawn you sacrifice to protect it." She shifted slightly, getting into a more comfortable position, and relaxed.
"Similarly, the President isn't protected so heavily because of his own will, or because of himself. I guess that often, he'd prefer to have some privacy. And, anyway, a President can be replaced. After all, we get a new President at almost every election. But, while he is in the big chair, he must be protected to ensure that the Federation keeps going on. I guess you can imagine what kind of mess we'd be in if the President was abducted or assassinated. So, once again, it is the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

"Yet, it is not by his hands that he keeps the Federation going, let alone strong.  It is by the hands of the pawns.  Essentially we keep the Federation at peace, so it is the needs of the many that we look after against our own needs.  But conversely we are expendable."  Cyrin mentioned finally having met someone other than a Vulcan who kept up with his train of thought.
"Aye. Although, I would also say that, in this case, and contrary to what some may think, the need of the many does not conflict with the needs of the few or the one. To keep the Federation at peace is as much one of our own personal need, than the need of most of the population. Of course, mrow, I agree that we as individual are quite expendable, even though I am sure that most people would differ." She laughed softly. "We all tend to consider ourselves unique, which is often true, and indispensable, which is much less true."

Cyrin nods, "In the whole scheme of things we are conformist.  Therefore making ourselves indispensable, you and I have conformed to Starfleet.  The President has conformed to having security around him, and so on.  So in essence, with that information would you consider our society a utopian society?  If so why?"
The Hirumarian tilted her head slightly, and looked at Cyrin. "Utopian? By essence, an utopia is something that can't be achieved, that can't become true. A goal no one will ever be able to reach. And, in my opinion, an utopia would be quite boring to live in." She chuckled. "Although, as far as I can tell, the founder worlds of the Federation have gone from a quite bad situation, especially the Earth, to be closer of an utopia than never before in their history."

She smiled, her tail flicking slowly, hanging on the side of the fallen branch. "My own homeworld never suffered the level of destruction Earth did during the Third World War. We've had our wars, but barely used any weapons of mass destruction during them. We achieved a planetary unification quite early in our history, at the beginning of our technological age. I guess it played a good part in preventing a full scale war to erupt and devastate Hirumaria."
"But, to come back to your question, I would say that the Federation has achieved a better kind of society than anyone else had before. Mrow, technology is of a great help for everyone, it helped eradicate most of the evils that plagued the member worlds, like war, disease and such. So, I would say that the Federation is a great society, when taken as a whole. But, there's always room for improvement, and we're far from being an utopia." She paused and rubbed at one of her round feline ears.

Cyrin laughed, "Well to a degree we are a utopian society.  One currency on earth, universal health care et cetera.  So with that, that is how the Federation has achieved a better type of society, through a utopian like discipline."
"I guess you got a point here, mrow. Although, I wouldn't say that the Federation is using a utopian like discipline. I'd rather a way more efficient policy for everything, and, for once, learning from the past to avoid repeating the same mistakes, and to better the people of the Federation, in all the meanings of the word. What do you think? Are the citizens of today's Federation better than the citizens of the member planets, before they became members, or even before the Federation was born?"
