“Life In The Academy: Part I”
=*= StarFleet Academy - A few years ago =*=
It was early in the afternoon, and Tamara was enjoying a snack on the terrace of the main restaurant of the Academy. It was a very sunny day, and the feline was enjoying the bright light of the sun, and the feeling of the warm sun rays on her fur. Or, what was visible of it anyway. She let out a low sigh-like mewl, for once truly hating the regulations of the Academy and StarFleet. If she would have been at home, there was a good chance she would have been wearing only the bare minimum of clothing, and enjoying a very nice sunbathe.
But home was very far. Both homes: Zetari and Hirumaria where, for all practical purposes, on the other end of the universe explored by the Federation, and the trip to either of them would take approximately the same time. Strictly speaking, Zetari was the furthest, being located in the Gamma Quadrant, while Hirumaria was only on the far reaches of the Alpha Quadrant, but the existence of the Bajoran and Spinward wormholes helped shorten the time it took to travel to Zetari.
Tamara had been called to give a series of lecture at the Academy, mostly about the differences between starship operations and starbase operations. She was one of the perfect candidates, being the Chief of Operations of Starbase Zetari, one of the biggest starbases in the Federation, not too far behind StarFleet Command Superstation. Her stay on Earth was coming to an end though, as the school year was ending, and she was looking forward being back on Zetari. She took a sip of her tea, and idly thought about requesting a short leave, to visit her family on Hirumaria.
Cyrin had his back turned to the guest lecturer reviewing over pads of information that she had spoke about in class earlier that day. A waitress came by him “What can I get you to drink?” she asked.
“Coffee, and cream and sugar on the side.”
The waitress nodded before jaunting off, while he waited Cyrin reread the differences in power management on a Starbase and Starship. He found it all very fascinating. He would need to know this as he was being sent to Versailles shortly to finish out his Academy days before receiving his official placement orders. The waitress returned with a cup and as well as a full pot of coffee and plenty of cream and sugar, setting it on the table she smiled at Cyrin, “Anything else?”
“No that will be all, thanks,” He said as he set the padd down and began to prepare his coffee, his eyes strayed for a second to see a couple of other cadets in yellow uniforms tossing a ball back and forth as he went to get set the spoon back on the table, however he missed and it fell to the ground with a clatter. He reached down to retrieve the spoon before someone tried to step on it.
The distinct noise of the spoon falling down shook Tamara out of her thoughts, and she turned, curious, to see who was behind her and had let something fall down. "Hello Cadet, mrow," she said when she recognized him, her soft purring voice making her easy to identify. "Enjoying the sunlight before class, I see?"
She did recognized him as one of her students, even though she couldn't put a name on his face yet. But he was one of the best students of her class, one of the most attentive, and, if she wasn't mistaken, it was because his first assignment was going to be on a starbase. She hoped that her lectures were useful for the Cadets, she wasn't really used to play the professor.
Looking up to the Lieutenant, he kind of smiled and attempted to go to attention at the same time while in a chair. “Lieutenant,” he said with a startle his attempt at going to attention went to no avail “I didn’t see you there. More like reviewing over your lecture today on the difference in power management. How are you?” he proffered after finally getting the spoon on the table and picking up some padds that had fallen due to the sudden jolt of his movement.
Tamara chuckled a little as he tried to do three things at the same time, and failed. "I'm enjoying a cup of tea, mrow, and the warm sun. Join me," she offered, while motioning to the chair next to hers. "I hope my lectures aren't too technical or difficult for you? I know that I can get carried away sometimes with technical terms. They're familiar to me, but not to you or any of the other Cadets."
Moving his padds as well as his coffee over to the other table, Cyrin smiled at the feline. “I thought professors weren’t allowed to fraternize with the cadets? And for me Lieutenant, your lectures are perfect, though could use a bit more technical items to them. So what’s it like? Out there,” he pointed to the sky. “I have never really been out there except when I was born, and then on a trip back to San Francisco. But I was a young boy at the time.”
