Thomas had spent most of the last few days in the Sensor pod. Repair crews had also spent a considerable amount of time within it during their time at the Romulan stardock. Resetting replaced components to previous configurations and general calibration had occupied his day, however the functionality of the sensor equipment was drawing closer to optimal every day and the exposure to the internals of several of the sensor pods facilities was proving to be quite educational to the Ensign.
Additionally he had made an interesting discovery within one of the sensors isoliner memory banks that had prompted his curiosity. For that reason he was standing at the door to the temporary office of the Chief of Science.
Having depressed the chime at the door's controls he waited to see if there was anyone home.
Nathanial heard his door chime, he had wanted to get it changed from the dull two tone it was set at, but being that this was mearly a temporary office, he had thought it better to work on more important things. Shifting his weight he pushed the panel behind him allowing him to step back into the hallway.
Thomas looked to his side as he could her a light thumping behind a panel, taking out the Tricorder he had on his waist, although before he could open it the panel popped out and in an unceremonious exit his commanding officer appeared. Nathanial looked up and addressed Ensign Clipper.
"Ahh Ensign, how can I help you today?"
Looking back at the door before staring back to the lieutenant who was offering the most casual of greetings. Scratching his crimson hair Thomas replied. "Um, hello Sir, I must admit I thought you would have gotten the hang of doors by now." He tried to keep a straight face as he again checked the door next to him before looking back over to Nathanial. Regardless of his attempt watching his superior emerge from a side panel to answer a door was almost too much.
"Doors?" Nathanial asked sounding puzzled. It took a few seconds to catch onto the Ensign's line of thinking. "Ahhh no no no, here have a look in here" Nathanial started as he pointed to the cubby in the wall. Thomas was greeted with a series of scanning equipment nestled inside the cubby.
Seeing the inside of the of the crevice Thomas was satisfied that Nathanial hadn't taken to bouts of pushing through false walls, his vivid yet childish imagination let down by reasonable circumstance. "Sir I was hoping to have a moment of your time if you're not too busy." Thomas inquired seeing that the lieutenant was engaged in another activity he didn't want to intrude on a job half done.
Nathanial nodded, closing the panel he escorted Thomas into his temporary office before taking thier usual seats across the table from each other.
Grabbing a trusty PADD, to keep his hands busy during the soon to follow discussion, he looked over to Thomas and nodded for him to start.
Taking his seat, the ensign remembered the purpose of his visit before the amusing distraction and he recomposed his demur to reflect that his proposal was a serious one. "Sir, I would like permission to complete a detailed investigation into the biological agent the Romulan warbird launched into the atmosphere of Ch'Dabhae. Some time and permission to study the sensor logs before we had to evacuate into the Yy'a. Tricorder data, any samples, logs from whatever is left of the shuttle and possibly some interviews for a report of the Biological agent, its delivery system as well as its effects."
Nathanial looked at the Ensign, he considered the request, Thomas had caused... ripples in the department of late, to trust him with such a task, could be a gamble. Nathanial flipped the proverbial coin in his head, landing tails... it always seemed to be tails... so what did tails mean? Letting it drop inside his head for he knew it could take up the better part of an hour exploring the metaphysical ramifications, he decided to instead follow his gut.
"Alright Ensign, you can head up the research team. You can find most of the data in these logs. Nathanial turned to his station and downloaded some information to the PADD, it happened so quickly that one might suspect that Nathanial was looking at the data already, and it was conveniently placed on his computer for easy access.
"Also I have a full molecular breakdown I took with the surface reconnaissance probe I brought with me to the surface, and I believe that Aejlen also has an actual sample."
"Thank you Sir." The ensign replied. The wealth of knowledge Nathaniel had at his disposal on the subject was comprehensive to be sure, his personal conclusion was that the lieutenant had been at the very least contemplating chasing this up in addition to his current duties.
A molecular breakdown in addition to a potential sample had Thomas surprised and excited, with the correlating data that existed in the sensor arrays he became quite hopeful that he would be able to generate quite comprehensive findings on the subject. In addition he was going to have a research team to back him up. Thomas hoped he would be able to make ground into the subject before their departure from the Romulan dock as he realized his time as well as everyone else's would quickly become occupied by new work. Looking back up from the PADD the Ensign commented. "If I find anything of value I'll let you know immediately Sir, everything else will be in regular reports."
Nathanial nodded. "Don't disappoint me Ensign." Nathanial waved his hand in dismissal, before picking up one of the PADD's on his desk.
Holding the PADD tightly in hand, he stood up while trying to remain focused on the interaction at hand rather than react to his compulsion of wanting to throw his nose back into the notes.
"Disappoint? Not with this one Sir." He patted the device in his hand a confident grin formed on his face as he spoke. Turning on his heel he made to leave the office.
Nathanial watched Thomas head for the door, before Thomas got to the door though Nathanial had a thought pop into his head. "Oh and Ensign" he started.
"I will expect daily reports! ...and be careful" he added the last line slightly quieter, but still audible enough for Thomas to hear it.
Spinning back again on his heel as he was beckoned back, he looked back at Nathaniel. The idea of having to submit daily reports was a minor inconvenience; however the prospect of the work ahead still saw his disposition remain positive. Tapping the PADD to his head in more an acknowledgement rather than informal salute it resembled and responded. "Daily it is Sir, can't blame a man for trying, I'll take every precaution in handling this because…"
Pausing his features lost the soft edges that his smile had created and became quite serious as he finished. "Unfortunately we all know what it is capable of. I want our research to make a difference sir."
Taking a backwards step before turning and making his exit he was becoming lost in thought, torn between the emotions of being excited about the chance to comprehensively research the virus but offset by the grim reminder of why it existed and what it was capable of.
