[USS Charon] SD241101.05 || "Foxes & Hounds - Part V" - Lt. Leon Athalla & Aev Keirianh

U.S.S. Charon

“Foxes & Hounds – Part 5”
________________________________

“We’re almost there”, the voice of Valaran softly echoed in the pale darkness.  Athalla carefully followed the monk and mercenary down a narrow staircase which seemed to plunge into the depths of nothingness.  Ancient smells lingered in the stale air as did their footsteps.  The random crackling of a lit torch lighting the way forward was the only other sound.  Leon’s apprehension seemed to increase the further they descended into the dark abyss.  He couldn’t discern the reason at first, but as stone gave way to soil and then to rock he was suddenly gripped with fear as the bodies of the long departed begin to appear entombed within the rocky walls of the staircase.  The monk was leading them into some sort of ancient catacomb.  The air chilled as they continued filling the pilot with a sense of dread.  Instinctively, Leon placed his hand at his side to locate a weapon only to discover it was missing.  He had lost his phaser sometime earlier and only now realized his vulnerability.  Could this monk be trusted?  Who was trying to kill them and why?  What was Aev keeping from him?  Questions he had no answers for clawed at his consciousness as they descended the answers elusive as the light around them.

“This way”, the monk called out.  Leon strained to see beyond into the darkness, but it was all consuming the monk’s torch a mere spark in an endless sea of obsidian black.  The walls of the staircase soon faded as the party entered some vast underground complex with no beginning and seemingly no end.  They walked in silence for several moments as Leon brushed past dusty stone tombs inscribed with intricate carvings and writings.  What was this place?

“Here.”  Leon stopped as the Monk brushed aside a layer of dust and cobwebs.  “These are ancient burial grounds.  My Vulcan brothers above would likely be most annoyed if they found us here as this is a sacred place that dates back a thousand years or longer and houses the remains of countless individuals who have dedicated their lives and resources to the pursuit of logic and the teachings that led the Vulcan people out of the chaos and darkness that threatened to consume them so long ago.  The world above has changed.  Vulcans have changed.  The universe continues to evolve, progress, and unfold, but here time is nearly meaningless.  This place preserves what was without regard to the present.

Bodies are laid to rest here and yet the katra lives on tied neither to flesh nor bound by the shackles of time.  I too buried my past here.  I thought that it would remain here forever and yet it seems I cannot escape it.  Perhaps my sins are far too great to merely be buried and forgotten.”

Valaran’s voice drifted off for a moment.  “However, if the tools of my past can somehow be used to benefit the future then perhaps I can find some small measure of comfort in that knowledge.”  Passing the torch to Aev, Valaran pushed open a large stone capstone which enclosed an ancient tomb.

“This tomb was never completed.  Even the monastery’s most ancient of records do not tell us who or for what this was constructed for.  It was here some eighty years ago I lay down the weapons of war and embraced the path of logic and reason forsaking my past, my family, and my people to atone for what I had done as a soldier of the Star Empire.  Even to this day those scars run deep.  And every day I seek to atone for the lives I extinguished in service to the state.

Aev, what you require is in there.  I cannot bring myself to touch them again.”

The mercenary said nothing and slowly reached into the tomb as Athalla looked on.  He withdrew a large metallic case which he sat upon the ground.  Valaran took several steps backwards unwilling to be near that which he loathed and perhaps feared.

The dusty case was opened.

Athalla looked on in fearful wonder as a museum of antique weaponry was exposed to the light for the first time in nearly a century.

Aev picked up a Romulan rifle whose flawless, jade green exterior glinted in the flicking torch light.  The weapon appeared untouched by the hand of time.  “It has been awhile”, the mercenary softly said brandishing the weapon with a reverence Leon did not understand.

“We were kings in those days and these were our scepters.  The weapons of today have lost their souls to efficiency and practicality.  With this weapon you truly knew you were Romulan.”

Valaran moved toward the mercenary and extended his hand which waivered over the rifle.  Leon skipped a breath when the monk’s hand suddenly grasped the weapon.  Valaran’s face flickered in the fire with a grotesque expression almost as if the weapon was somehow burning him or causing the man great pain.

“Keirianh.  You and I parted ways that day.  We both chose our paths.  Whatever our destiny holds for each of us I beseech you to not use this weapon in vain.  Do not take the lives of the innocent.  It already has the blood of too many upon it that did not deserve death.  If you intend to use it, it must be for the cause of justice.  If it is revenge, hatred, or malice that drives you it will forsake you.  It will no longer tolerate evil.”

Keirianh solemnly nodded.  “You have my word old friend.  The one I seek is responsible for the death of many lives both here on Vulcan and I suspect elsewhere as well.  They deserve nothing but the swift and merciless hand of death.  They have forsaken the living and embraced death.  I will ensure they find that which they seek.  The Black Reaper awaits them.”

“Whoa there”, Leon suddenly interrupted.  “I have no clue what you two are talking about but you Aev still must live up to your word!  We’re doing this my way remember?  Hunting these people down was not part of the plan!  This is Vulcan!  We are on foreign soil.  It isn’t our duty nor our right to endanger others in this madness.  We can do what we can to find these people, but it is up to Vulcan security to stop them!”

Aev turned toward the pilot his dark eyes flickering in the dim torch light.  He approached the pilot and placed a firm hand on the pilot’s shoulder.

“Leon.  You are a skilled pilot and a cunning soldier.  Your human compassion and friendship in recent weeks has managed to melt the ice around my soul which I believed to be impenetrable.  You gave me a reason to live again and for the first time in ages I have felt the warmth of hope within me.  For that I am eternally in your debt.”

“Aev… I”

“Listen Athalla.  We both share a bond as soldiers. Human, Romulan, Vulcan – our race has no meaning.  We are fighters.  I’ve seen the pain in your eyes from some past events which mercilessly tortures your soul.  You hide from it behind jokes, alcohol, or women but you cannot escape it.  Do not let it consume you Leon.  If you give in to hatred and fear you will lose yourself to a fate far worse than those you have killed.  Look at me!  Do not lose that compassionate spark within you that has shown me friendship.  That alone defines you as a soldier from that of a heartless killer.  You cannot forget the past, but you can change the future.  Use your abilities to atone for your mistakes however great and those in the past will grant you forgiveness.”

Leon stood motionless unable to speak or even breathe.  How..how did this Romulan know of his past?  Who was he?

“Keirianh.  I…”

“Leon”, the mercenary interrupted.  “Remember my words.  And forgive me for my actions.  Where I must go you cannot follow.”

With a swift, sure move, the mercenary brought the rifle down upon the pilot’s neck.  Leon looked up at Aev with eyes filled with confusion and emotion before his body crumpled to the ground.

“Valaran, take care of the human.  I entrust his well being to you.”

“I will look after him”, the monk replied.  “And what of you?”

“I have a mission to fulfill and a contract to complete.  I have much to atone for.  My heart and my soul have been frozen for too long chilled by the betrayals of my past.  This lowly human who I could kill without so much a thought somehow managed to cut through decades of pain, anger, and despair.  He has shown me the error of my ways and the path I must now walk.”

The monk nodded.  “Perhaps the Elements have not completely forsaken you Aev.  There is always hope.  We must learn to open our eyes and search it out even in our darkest hour.”

“Forgive me Leon Athalla.  I hope we can meet again someday.”

Aev turned to Valaran.  “Goodbye old friend.”

“Take care Aev Keirianh.  Seek the light and truth of logic and do not give in to the temptations of dark emotion.  May the elements watch over you.”

“And you also.  Jolantru, old friend.”

The mercenary turned and moved off disappearing into the darkness of the catacombs.

Valaran knelt down near the body of the human.  How ironic it was that their old enemy had been responsible for breaking the shackles that had for so long bound his friend.  Perhaps human soldiers had far deeper qualities that he had ever thought possible.  Surely Aev felt that they did.

He lifted the male onto his shoulder and headed for the exit.  He would require days of meditation to process recent events.  He was unsure if there was any logic that could fully explain what he had just witnessed.  Perhaps he would be forced to resign himself to the feelings and emotions of his heart however illogical.

He could only pray for the safety of his friend.  If the Elements were gracious perhaps he might even be allowed to see him again even if in his heart he knew he had seen the last of Aev Keirianh.

[Earth, Paris]

The communicator next to the nightstand blared forcing the President to sit up in her bed and press the button activating the device.  She stretched her muscles and yawned as the stupor began to fade "what is it?"  Alazera asked wrapping her silk gown cover around her as she stood.

"Sorry to disturb you Madam President but I have some disturbing news from Romulus.  Our Embassy was apparently attacked.  Details are sketchy but we have been informed that Admiral Enor has been killed along with Ambassador Po.  It seems the Romulan Praetor also died in the attack.  The USS Warrior has sent down rescue teams but they have yet to locate Spock."

Alazera pressed a palm against her forehead and sat back down on the bed "get me Nanthrissa now.  Call up the entire cabinet.  There will be a meeting in three hours."

"Understood Ma'am..."

[Earth, San Francisco, Starfleet Command]

"You deliberately placed those Marines on that station!"  General Parker stood up from his seat, out of breath, as he stared down the Romulan Captain.  After a short pause to regain his composure he continued "and because of your actions several of them ended up dead.  Are you saying you don't have any responsibility for that Captain?"

"They attempted to kill me and my children.  What responsibility do I have to mutineers?  Unfortunately because of our location we had no other recourse.  It was either the Romulan station or maroon them on a planet."  Shiarrael stared at the General "if faced with a similar circumstance I would make the same decision.  It is regrettable that NeoDyne used them as..."

"Captain- Neodyne is not the subject of this inquiry.  Please do not mention them again.  Their involvement is being investigated separately."  Kauri warned.  The Caitian looked rather sober compared to Parker who readily seemed prepared to burst at the seams.

Shiarrael glared at Parker "though I find it very interesting General.  I recall seeing your name on their orders.  Did you not have them assigned to the Charon?  They served under you from what I remember.  How could you not recall their hostility towards Romulans?  Or perhaps you did.  Perhaps what happened aboard the Charon originated with you."

"How dare you!"  Parker exploded and picked up the PADD on his desk throwing it down to the podium where the Captain stood.

"Enough!"  Kauri slammed his paw into the table causing it to shake.  Parker cleared his throat and sat down as the Caitian continued "Captain you are pushing yourself thin of my patience.  This inquiry here is to determine whether or not you knowingly violated Starfleet regulation- however instead of defending yourself you are more interested in throwing accusations towards your superiors.  I have heard enough and believe there is sufficient evidence to move forward with court martial proceedings."  He looked at the security officers flanking her "please escort the Captain to the Brig."

"That won't be necessary."  A voice echoed from the center row.  Standing there was a tall Andorian Admiral.  Her long while hair bounced as she made her way down the steps that passed between the small audience.    "I am disbanding this inquiry."

Kauri and the others stood up "on whose authority Admiral Zhen?"

"Mine.  The Federation Council just held an emergency session.  I have been appointed Command in Chief.  If you don't believe me you can glance at the Federation news nets."  She looked at the security officers "now, please release the Captain, and..."  She looked at Parker "General, we need to have a long discussion.  Please contact my yeoman and schedule an appointment."  As the security officers' stepped back Nanthrissa nodded at Shiarrael.  "Please follow me Captain."

Shiarrael nodded her head a bit confused about the commotion but followed the Admiral as ordered.  As soon as they were in the corridor the Admiral stopped and turned around "Captain- we need your help.  There's been an incident on Romulus.  The President wants to speak with you."

[Earth, Paris, President's Office]

"So this is the Romulan Captain?"  Alazera studied the woman who entered her office along with Admiral Zhen "have you briefed her on what happened Nanthrissa?"

"Not yet Madam President."  Nanthrissa said "I can do that now."  The Admiral motioned to a set of chairs at the center of the President's office and Shiarrael took her seat in one of the plush things.  The Admiral sat down adjacent to her while the President took the seat across.  "As you may know we sent Admiral Jolias Enor and Ambassador Spock to Romulus as Federation representatives to present our formal complaint over the events at Vulcan.  They were to spearhead the negotiations over a settlement to the crisis- however today there was an attack on the Federation embassy."  The Andorian frowned deeply "unfortunately the Admiral lost his life.  Ambassador Spock is currently missing."

"Quite unfortunate.  However, I do not see how this involves me.  Apparently I am considered a criminal."  Shiarrael expression was ridged "I have given much to the Federation in the two years that I have served it- including the life of my parents.  In return I have been branded a criminal.  I have no more interest in serving it."

She stood up but the President reached across the table and grabbed her wrist.  "Please sit down Captain."  Shiarrael frowned but capitulated and sat back down "I heard about your parents.  I am sorry but right now there is very little standing in the way between us and war.  While we have many knowledgeable and capable vessel commanders- Captain you are truly unique.  If anyone can find the truth about what happened on Romulus and prevent a war it is you.  You know your people better than anyone else in the Federation.  We need your help.  I want the Charon to head to Romulus immediately to investigate what happened, to search for Ambassador Spock, and to continue the negations in their stead."  Alazera looked into those angry violate eyes "and  if you succeed I will pardon you of any crimes and have you granted Federation citizenship, if that is what you want."

"That is a heavy request."  Shiarrael said.  "I am no longer considered anything but a traitor to many within the Empire.  If I go there it may start the war you hope to prevent."

"It is a risk we're willing to take Captain."  Nanthrissa spoke up "we need Ambassador Spock.  While he is missing there is still hope he is alive and that is the key here.  You must find him.  Everything else is secondary.  That is why we feel you are the only one we can trust.  You have an experience and knowledge of Romulus that no one else does.  Will you do this Captain?"

Shiarrael nodded her head "Admiral Enor is someone I considered to be a friend.  If nothing else then to find out who is responsible for his death.  However, my crew is scattered, and the Charon is still undergoing repair."

"They have already been recalled.  This is a priority.  The Charon must depart Vulcan within three days Captain.  I have assigned the USS Quantum Fury to take you back to Vulcan.  Thank you."  Nanthrissa pressed her commbadge "Quantum Fury this is Admiral Zhen.  The Captain is ready to beam up."  She took a step back as Shiarrael dematerialized with a somewhat surprised expression at the suddeness.

Alazera looked at the empty seat "do you think this is a wise idea Nanthrissa."

"It's not like we have a choice.  She was right.  She sacrificed a great deal in saving Vulcan.  Enor trusted her- we should.  In any case, no one else knows Romulus as well as she does- at least anyone we want to rely on."

[USS Charon] SD241101.02 - Plot Prelude "Crossroads" Part I

[Neutral Zone]

The ambience of the star speckled darkness was disturbed by single flash of light- from the center of the flash an elongated object emerged.  As it slowed the long grey object soon pulled together and coalesced into a Sovereign class starship.  For the next ten minutes it sat silently in the darkness- the blue and red glows of its nacelles decorating the metallic hull.

Suddenly, in the blanket of darkness, a heavy ripple distorted the starfield as a three D'Kazanka Romulan cruisers decloaked.  The first ship moved its beak towards the Sovereign's forward hull while the other two twisted and dove towards opposite sides of the ship effectively surrounding it.

[USS Warrior, Bridge]

"Well, it seems our escorts have arrived."  Captain Isaiah Pope  smiled nervously at the Romulan ships dominating his view screen.  The grey haired ebony Captain sat up as his tactical officer announced that they were being hailed.  He turned his head and looked at the Admiral seated next to him "well Admiral- do you want to take this call or should I?"

Enor withheld a sigh.  He still couldn't fathom why Starfleet kept insisting on sending this scientist on such important excursions.  Give me a lab and I'll be happy- I promise.  He let his grim expression fade into a half-hearted smile as he nodded to Pope.  "All right.  I'll do you this favor Captain- but you owe me."  He took a deep breath and stood up taking a few steps forward "on screen."

The warbird was replaced by a Romulan bridge - the utilitarian dimness Enor always found extra depressing greeted him.  Stepping into the screen was a Romulan Riov who dismissively nodded his head at the Admiral "Jolan'tru Federation ship.  We have been ordered to escort you to Romulus.  Please keep your shields and weapons disarmed to prevent any misunderstandings.  That is all."  With that the screen cut back to the view of the starfield.

"Well, that was unusually brief."  Pope commented from his chair.

Enor twisted around "short and to the point.  By the way- where the hell is the Ambassador?  I haven't seen him since we picked him up from Vulcan."

"In his quarters I imagine."  Pope answered wearing a rather weary expression as he looked over to his helmsman "Lieutenant Paolo, set a course to follow our escorts and match speeds.  Make sure there are no misunderstandings."

"No misunderstandings?"  Enor chuckled and considered the irony after the Vulcan incident.  Looking at Pope he pointed at the turbolift "I am going to take a page from the Ambassador's book and retire to my quarters.  Contact me once we arrive at Romulus.  Sitting on the bridge of this ship is too nostalgic for my tastes."

"Regret taking those bars, eh?"  Pope grinned and stood up to escort the Admiral to the lift but his tactical officer interrupted him.

"Sir, we are receiving a message from Earth.  It's the General.  He would like to speak with you."

"Ah, I see."  Pope looked at Enor and waved at the lift "well I'm sure you know your way around Admiral.  I have to take this message.  I'll have my second inform you when we arrive."

"Good."  Enor nodded his head and headed towards the lift.

Several hours later...

[Romulus, Federation Embassy]

Ambassador Lanril Po scurried across the grounds of the Embassy with several aids trailing behind him as the shuttle containing the Admiral landed in the front courtyard.  He arrived just in time to see the shuttle's rear hatch lower.  He let out a relieved breath as two security escorts stepped out followed by the Admiral wearing his dress whites.  "Admiral Enor!  What a pleasure!"

"Hello Ambassador Po."  Enor smiled and looked around.  The Federation embassy was a quaint five story building that lined the edges of the waterway that separated the city Romulans referred to as Ra'tleihfi and the Capital they called I'Ramnau.  A large retaining wall encompassed the rear of the ten acre facility bordered the shore while three security walls covered the rest.  "Where is the envoy?"

"Ah, he arrived just before you!  He requested a room inside the Embassy.  I found one for him and had a few of my aids escort him.  He said he would join us shortly and to continue on with the banquet until his arrival.  In either case I'm glad you're here.  The Romulan Praetor just arrived and I've been having a hard time with her- she certainly is not as personable as her predecessor."  Po pressed his palm against Enor's shoulder blade as he urged him towards the building.

"Ambassador...Amb..."  Enor paused as he stepped into the building and was surprised to find the interior teeming with people.  There were at least a dozen or so Romulans dressed formally along with a few Klingons, Cardassians, Tholians, and Lyrans plus Federation species scattered about the mix.  "Did you invite every diplomat on Romulus?"  He tried not to groan "I am not a diplomat Ambassador..."

"No, you are a military officer."  Jole twisted around to find an older Romulan woman grinning at him.  He squinted recognizing her face...Cretak "Praetor.  It is an honor to finally meet you."

"I wish I could say the same Admiral- but it seems your government is adamant about the Empire accepting responsibility for something it neither condoned nor endorsed.  If you think your presence here will intimidating, you are mistaken."  She smiled, it was a sharp smile that made Enor's head hurt.

"See, I tried to tell them that."  Enor smiled sarcastically as Po stood next to him.  The aids apparently having scattered to the wind "in either case this is not a time for that discussion.  We will have plenty of time when we begin our negotiations.  In the mean time the Ambassador here has created quite a nice party.  Why don't you enjoy some Federation hospitality?  Might warm you up a littl..."  A buzzing sound caught his attention and twisted his head up to look out the windows "what is that?"

Lanril shuffled and looked over.  "I'm not sure?  Perhaps there is an issue with one of the cooling units?  I will go check-"

A shrill scream caused everyone to twist their heads towards the entrance but it was too late.  A massive fireball incinerated everything nearby as it conflagrated and pushed its way through the entire compound blowing out windows and doors with great fury.

Blackness engulfed Enor's vision as the fireball threw him into a collapsing pillar.  When he awoke he found his torso pinned beneath the concrete pillar.  Soot, ash, and blood covered his forehead.  With his arm he rubbed the grit from his eyes and looked up to find billowing black smoke flowing across the ceiling and pouring out the massive windows.  He choked and coughed.  Hearing nearby footsteps he lifted his bloody hand "I'm stuck here."

An unfamiliar Romulan figure crouched over him "Admiral, it seems you survived.  Unfortunately you have something we want."

Enor's eyes widened as the figure reached down and wrapped fingers around his neck.  He barely had time to react when the figure squeezed tightly.  Enor struggled to pry the hand away but the effort was simply futile.  He reached up and grabbed the figure's collar tightly and glared into their eyes angrily.

It took a minute but the Admiral finally stopped struggling and his hand fell to the floor limp.
