[USS Charon] SD.241008.01 || Joint Log || "Don't Let Go..." || LtJG Anderson & Lt Dexter

… BEGIN JOINT LOG …

Auden yawned. He was lying in his bed, his comforter cutting him off just where the lining of his boxers were showing. Both he and Mark had been chatting for the past little while, Auden was still reluctant to sleep but he felt soon enough he wouldn't have a choice. "Yeah. There was a sparring match between a marine officer and the commanding officer of this vessel…"

Mark was sitting on his bed, clad in shorts and a tank top, the later out of consideration for Auden, who Mark had decided must be modest. "Yeah, I heard about that, was it a good match?"

"I didn't watch it!" Auden glared at Mark. "Unnecessary violence if you ask me. This is the twenty-fifth century." He stopped mid-sentence and yawned again, he couldn't help but chuckle a little as well knowing he sounded like an old woman. "I guess it was their choice though.. I.." He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to fight off the sleep, "I.. should find out tomorrow.." He closed his eyes once more and within moments fell into a deep sleep.

Mark was going to apologize, seeing Auden's glare, but the man continued talking and then was asleep. He grinned, then went over and pulled the covers up. He dimmed the lights, then got in bed and started reading a PADD. An hour later, Mark was ready to turn in himself. He gave a glance at the sleeping man, allowing himself just a moment to admire, then went to sleep.

= / \ = 3 hours later....

"You are worthless and should consider yourself lucky I'm even with you!" It felt so real. Auden was looking up at Geordan who had just pushed him to the ground. "Stop it!" Auden could feel Geordan's foot in his chest. "You are never to talk back to me again! You hear me!" Auden started crying while laying there on the ground. He had once again fallen victim to the much bigger man whom he was supposed to be protected by. He was trapped, trapped in this nightmare.

Mark was startled awake, but lay perfectly still. His training coming through. It only took him a moment to realize it was Auden calling out. He quickly got out of bed then, and took the few steps needed to reach the other man. "Auden" he said firmly, hoping to wake the man without frightening him any more.

Auden was still trapped in a deep hell. "Geordan.. Stop!" He pleaded with his lover. Geordan took no mercy, his soul was all but lost in this moment, so much anger was directed to the helpless man that lay before him. Auden felt another blow to his abdomen and cried out in pain… Why was this lasting so much longer than the other beatings he endured? What had he done to deserve this?

Mark's gut clenched, he was uncharacteristically moved by the scene in front of him, feeling for Auden. He gentle placed his hand on Auden's forearm and called out "Auden!!!" louder then before.

It was as if there was light all around him. He could hear and feel Mark. Geordan's image slipped away into the darkness and Auden jumped up throwing himself into Mark's arms. His heart was beating uncontrollably, his body in a cold sweat and tears flowing from both ducts.

Mark could do nothing but wrap his arms around the crying man. He shifted to the bed, controlled his physical reaction, and starting rubbing Auden's back. "It's ok. You're safe now."

It was different this time. Auden had all but forgotten what it was to be held and feel safe and secure in the arms of another man. He had refused to sleep near his brother when they lived together during his treatment. He placed his head in the crevasse of Mark's neck and tried to calm himself down. "Don't let go.."

"I'm not going anywhere." Mark assured him, he continued to rub Auden's back in a calming manner. What the hell was haunting Auden, Mark wondered. He wasn't sure what else to do other then wait it out.

It took a few more minutes but Auden's tears ceased, his heart beat returned to normal and his cold sweat finished. He took a few more deep breaths and returned to reality. He was currently being held by a man he had only met a little over 24 hours before, they were both half naked and he had just had one of his worst night terrors in weeks.

He slowly broke the embrace with Mark and looked up; he was finding it hard to keep eye contact. "I'm sorry you had to go through that.."

Mark let him go, and moved over on the bed a bit. He didn't allow himself to think about how much he'd liked the embrace. "It's alright, don't worry about it. Are you ok now?"

Auden nodded. He thought he was alright? Had his counsellor's back on earth seen what he had just gone through, he certainly would not have been returning to active duty let alone being sent on a deep space assignment. "Yes. Thank you Mark…" Auden was still rather close to Mark, he placed his hand underneath Mark's. "Can we keep this between us please?... I know it was a little bit freaky but… I'm fine.. Okay?"

Mark gently squeezed his hand, unable to stop himself. "It doesn't leave this room. Do you want to talk about it?" Mark offered.

Auden felt comforted. This was obviously moving a bit too fast in his head however. He was a very private person; surely he couldn't tell Mark what was the cause of his night terrors? They had just met. He gave Mark a tug on his hand indicating he wanted the man to move closer. "I don't know if I can just yet…"

Mark moved closer with a small smile. "It's ok. I understand."  He had after all just met the man.

Auden pushed himself back into his bed and slid over. He kept Mark's hand in his own. Maybe he was being selfish but he wanted the comfort of Mark, the security of being safe and knowing he was there. The desire to lay beside Auden struck Mark fiercly. He took a deep breath, and forced the desire down. He patted Auden's hand.  He would sit with him as long as he was needed.

= / \ = A little over an hour later…

Auden felt himself waking up, had he fell back asleep? He quickly realized there was still someone holding his hand. He opened his eyes to see Mark still sitting nearby him, holding his hand. "Mark? You're still awake? And sitting by me?"

"Hey" Mark smiled at him, then let go of his hand. "I didn't want to wake you up, and thought it might help you sleep better if I stayed."

Auden's heart skipped a beat. Why did this man care enough for him to do such a thing? Auden was the one keeping him up and was the one who woke him up in the first place. "Tha.. Thank you Mark.." Auden moved over a bit more and then patted the spot beside him indicating to Mark he should lay down.

"You're welcome, but it's no big deal. I didn't mind." Mark watched Auden's movement, had to swallow, then shook his head. "I don't think that's such a good idea. I'm afraid I'd like that just a little too much." He explained.

Auden looked up at Mark and understood what he meant. The sexual tension was obvious. "I don't want to make you sit up awake all night. Now lay down." The cute doctor gave Mark a serious look, behind the serious look though was a genuine need.

Mark relented, against his better judgement. He laid down beside Auden, turning onto his side and wrapping an arm around the other man's waist "Is this ok?" He asked, trying to keep his tone neutral. He was indeed like ing this too much, though he controlled the physical aspect.

Auden sighed deeply. This is what he needed. Just to be held. "Yes." He took only moments to fall back asleep, encompassed by his guiding light..

= / \ = In the morning….

Mark awoke, still spooned to Auden. His body betraying his desire. He gently disengaged himself, and headed to the bathroom. Laid his head against the bulkhead and tried to contol himself. It did no good and with a muttered curse, Mark took care of the matter himself, cursing again as Auden's name escaped his lips at the moment of climax.

Ambassador M'Ryna had to admit that life onboard Versailles was always interesting. Never was there a dull moment. In the past two years alone the station had fought the Krivaldi, the Borg, blown up, knocked off course. . .  just to name a few. She purred slightly at the thought.  Recently, she had found herself returning to give updates to Kzinthi hegemongy and the Caitian counsul as to developments within the Federation and the surrounding Empires. Of immediate concern to the Kzin had been the Romulan decision to take the Lyran homeworld under its wing as a protectorate. The animosty between Kzinthi and the Lyrans was well established and centuries old ; personally, M'Ryna wasn't sure if anyone quite recalled what it was all about and she was quite certain that no one cared any longer. It simply existed now out of homage to history – but lacked any real cause. However, the newly formed developments were cause for the Kzin to take notice, to be shaken out of the slumbering appearance of ambivalence and to begin making preparations. They could not, would not risk being invaded by the Romulans due to weaknesses along the Lyran border. The fortifications begun  - M'Ryna's first trip….'home'.  And so it had been for the last few months.  Now, she found herself settling once more into her quarters on board Versailles only to be moved from them due to some foul smelling gas that had been released into the ventilation shaft. It had taken 2 days to clear the smell from the pillows and cushions and to find adequate replacements both of color and scale, not to mention durability. She surveyed the new purchases and decided they would do. She had returned to Versailles, much like she went, virtually unnoticed. She had decided that onboard the station, that was perhaps a good thing. What did not attract attention could avoid detection and therefor avoid a ton of paperwork and hostilities. She notified several of the other delegates onboard that she had returned and requested an audience with the Klingons. They perhaps had some mutual enemies and now would see the best time to explore those unchartered waters of common ground. She sent a dinner invitation to the Louphomme Ambassador – Kraakdon.  She always enjoyed their conversations. Like her, he illisted more than a few raised eyebrows and when the two dined together at the Toothless Targh, people would turn their heads at all angles trying to figure out the topic of conversation. It as rather amusing.  On a more graceful note, she sent a letter to Ambassador Phlamel along with tickets for he and his wife to an upcoming theatre production that was to be held in one of the larger holodeck rooms. It was sure to be a delightful evening and she hoped they would join her.  Dropping a note of courtesy to the Vulcan Ambassador that she had only met in passing and she finally sent a formal request to the Admiral to provide an update. That done, she curled up, an amazing feat to watch as her 7 foot plus frame gracefully folded in on itself, her tail curling around her, her whiskers twitching. She was exhausted – and at the moment she didn't care about much else other than the fact she could sleep without the incessant hum of someone in the background.  By morning she had no doubt that her calendar and her inbox would be full and work would resume full tilt.

[USS Charon] SD241008.01 || Duty Log || "The Guest" - Savant

Colin Pinnell <pinnellcb@thehiddenkingdom.com> wrote to charon@ucip.org:

"The Guest"

Savant walked alongside the Vulcan hologram, both of them the vision of
calmness and surety. What Savant displayed to the world, however, was
never what went on beneath. The program churned beneath the calm ocean
surface, twisting itself into logical contortions in trying to deduce
everything it could from this visitor. Given that it too was simply a
hologram, Savant knew full well that the surface image had nothing to do
with the true motivations it may have. She would have laughed, had she
such an instinct - Savants' own advantages turned against her.

The avatar from the space entity was pleasant, polite, and apparently
far more interested in tiny details than anything else. She had stopped
for almost a full minute to examine the corner edge of a wall terminal.
She stared at crewmembers without embarrassment or any sense of decency.
She paused to look into light fixtures and had marveled at the
turbolift. An organic might reason that the creature was from space, so
would no doubt be enthralled by the tiny intricacies of a starship.
Savant doubted this to be so- it was probably just using the hologram as
a pointer to show referents of interest.

Savant had been speaking with the alien hologram since they had left the
Bridge together, but her guest was difficult to really understand. Oh,
she knew the words, but had little understanding of how they were
supposed to go together to form meaningful sentences. A Vulcan this was
not.

"You are Charon, yes?" her charge asked innocently as they were paused
to stare into the window of a small crew lounge.

Savant shrugged, as it was a good approximation but not really precise,
"I reside within Charon's network, but I am not dependent on it. I can
and do move to other systems."

The Vulcan hologram raised an eyebrow in the classically measured Vulcan
way. "May I meet Charon? I would very much like to."

Even as the words were being spoken, puzzle pieces fell into place. The
entity thought Charon was alive, a single entity. Perhaps it thought the
crew were parasites, or symbiotes. Savant chose her words carefully,
fearful that the thing might act rashly if it came to wrong conclusions.
"Charon is not a living thing - it is a construction, an extension of
the crew. They are naturally confined to the surfaces of certain
planets. The ship allows them to survive and move in space."

It turned away from the window to look at Savant, and then peered back
inside. The people within the small lounge were focusing on their
lunches and hadn't noticed the interloper as of yet. "So they, as a
group, are Charon. Charon is the scales that they grow to protect them
from the void."

Savant nodded. "It is. You could consider them a collective."

The guest pressed her face close to the glass, squinting, and then stood
straight again. "They are a messy collective. Self-adjustment would be
good for you." Her words spoke volumes still - The guest didn't see
Savant as an equivalent to the organics. Did it think that Savant was
the collective will of the crew? She would have to deal with that
supposition quickly.

"They do not self-adjust easily, and each of them is independent - they
communicate with one another only weakly. I was designed by them as an
assistant."

This gave the Vulcan hologram pause; she turned to look at Savant
critically, with the same lack of modesty that Savant herself often
showed. She searched, and likely found nothing to reveal the truth in
the matter. Moments passed before she spoke. "You are one of their
constructs. One of their scales, to shield them from the sun."

"That's not a bad analogy. I am just a construct which can act, whereas
Charon doesn't. You could perhaps see me more as their child than their
tool."

"You are Charon's child." The Vulcan woman nodded and continued to walk.

Savant would have winced at the statement, but of course the hologram
didn't. Their guest spoke with such finality that the matter was likely
closed, but it wasn't *true*. Savant followed attentively, and silence
passed between them a few moments more.

"Charon is a nest."

"Yes, that's right," Savant nodded - perhaps the creature was getting it
after all. Also, it apparently knew what nests were and likely had one.
Savant could easily imagine a beast like this hollowing out an asteroid
and coiling up inside.

"You are the children living within it."

Err.. Savant wasn't sure how to reply to that one just yet. Was that
good, bad? Was it accurate? Savant had to borrow a few dozen more
available processing threads in order to even understand the statement,
much less concoct a reply. buy the time she was doing so, the Vulcan
hologram had smiled and turned to face.

"I don't know where your mother is, or if you have one. But you seem to
be good children. I will watch for you."

And then it winked away, as quickly as it had come.
